AI voice agent cost in 2026: per minute, build and run

Voice AIOct 2026 · 10 min read · Skygnosis Founder

There are three numbers in the cost of an AI voice agent: what each minute of conversation costs, what it costs to build the agent around your business, and what it costs to keep it working. Most articles give you one and hide the others. Here are all three, from published prices on 6 October 2026.

1. The cost per minute

A voice agent stitches together four parts on every call: telephony (the phone line), speech-to-text, a language model that decides what to say, and text-to-speech. Platforms either charge for each part or bundle them.

Retell AI prices by component with no platform fee:

  • Voice infrastructure: $0.055 a minute
  • Language model: $0.0016 to $0.16 a minute depending on the model
  • Text-to-speech: $0.015 a minute with Retell voices, $0.04 to $0.10 with ElevenLabs voices
  • Telephony: $0.015 a minute

Retell's own worked example, with a mid-priced model and Retell voices, comes to $0.165 a minute.

Vapi charges a $0.05 a minute hosting fee and passes model costs through at cost (roughly $0.01 for speech-to-text, $0.01 to $0.05 for the language model, $0.015 to $0.024 for voice), with telephony on top. Plans run from free to $999 a month for higher concurrency, and HIPAA support is a $2,000 a month add-on.

Bland AI bundles the models: $0.14 a minute on its free platform plan and $0.12 on its $299 a month plan.

ElevenLabs Agents charges $0.08 a minute within plan allowances (from $6 a month for 75 minutes to $990 for 12,375 minutes), with the language model and telephony charged at cost on top.

Telephony in the US through Twilio costs $0.0085 a minute inbound on a local number and $0.014 outbound, plus $1.15 a month per number.

The practical range for a production agent in the US is about $0.08 to $0.17 a minute all-in; Vapi's own calculator gives $82 to $129 per 1,000 minutes. At 3,000 minutes a month that is roughly $240 to $510.

2. The cost per minute in India

Indian voice AI platforms price in rupees and per connected minute:

  • Ringg AI: Rs 6 per connected minute, pay as you go
  • Bolna: about Rs 5.52 (6 US cents) a minute standard; pilot packs bring it nearer 4.2 to 4.6 cents
  • Plivo telephony: Rs 0.38 a minute inbound or outbound, Rs 200 a month per number
  • Exotel: billed in 60-second pulses; its developer documentation gives Rs 0.50 per pulse as an example and calls its rates indicative

One Indian vendor summarises the market as Rs 2 to Rs 12 a minute headline, Rs 3 to Rs 6 most common, and warns that effective cost runs two to four times the headline once platform fees, failed calls and minimums are included. Treat that as a vendor view, but the warning is sound: always price a month of real traffic, not a single minute.

3. The cost to build

Agencies that sell voice agent builds publish ranges. They disagree, so we list three, all vendor estimates:

  • Master of Code (2026): $10,000 to $25,000 for a proof of concept, $25,000 to $50,000 mid-tier, $50,000 to $150,000+ advanced, $150,000 to $300,000+ enterprise.
  • OnGraph (June 2026): $5,000 to $15,000 MVP, $15,000 to $50,000 mid-level, $40,000 to $100,000+ advanced.
  • Softcery: $1,000 to $15,000 to configure an existing platform, $80,000 to $200,000 for a custom integrated build.

What moves a project between those bands:

  • Integrations. Reading and writing to your calendar, CRM, field service software or ERP is usually most of the work. An agent that only takes messages is cheap; one that books a real slot for the right technician is not.
  • Call logic. Qualification rules, emergencies, multiple languages, transfers to humans with context.
  • Compliance. HIPAA for healthcare, call recording consent, and in the US the TCPA rules on AI-generated voices for outbound calls.
  • Testing. Real callers interrupt, mumble and change their minds. Testing against recorded calls is what separates a demo from a production agent.

4. The cost to run

The minute price is only part of the running cost. Budget for:

  • Platform plans for concurrency (how many calls at once) and support.
  • Phone numbers per location.
  • Maintenance when your prices, services, staff or software change. Agencies commonly quote 15 to 25% of the build cost a year.
  • Monitoring. Someone should review a sample of calls every week, at least for the first months.

A worked example

A home services company with three locations takes 2,500 inbound calls a month averaging three minutes: 7,500 minutes.

  • Off-the-shelf specialist (for example Sameday AI's $789 plan with 1,000 minutes): the plan fits a fraction of the volume, so check overage terms before you compare.
  • Custom agent on a voice platform at $0.08 to $0.17 a minute: about $600 to $1,275 a month in usage, plus the build and maintenance.
  • Human answering service at $3.45 to $5 a minute: about $25,900 to $37,500 a month, which is why most firms at this volume use a mix.

The deciding factor is rarely the minute price. It is whether the agent books the job into the system you already run, so nobody has to call the customer back.

Where we fit

We build voice agents connected to the systems a business already uses: CRM, calendar, field service or ERP, in more than one language, with a human handover that carries the context. For simple call answering, an off-the-shelf receptionist is usually the better buy, and we will say so.

Common questions

How much does an AI voice agent cost per minute?

On published platform pricing in October 2026, about $0.08 to $0.17 per minute all-in for a typical setup. Retell AI's own worked example adds up to $0.165 a minute; Bland AI charges $0.12 to $0.14 a minute including the speech and language models; ElevenLabs charges $0.08 a minute for its agents plus the language model and telephony.

How much does an AI voice agent cost in India?

Indian platforms publish rates such as Rs 6 per connected minute (Ringg AI) and about Rs 5.52 a minute (Bolna's standard rate). Indian telephony through Plivo costs about Rs 0.38 a minute. One Indian vendor describes the market as Rs 2 to Rs 12 a minute headline, with Rs 3 to Rs 6 most common, and warns effective cost runs higher once fees are added.

How much does it cost to build a custom AI voice agent?

Agency estimates published in 2026 start at about $5,000 to $25,000 for a minimum viable agent, $15,000 to $50,000 for a mid-level agent with integrations, and $50,000 to $150,000 or more for advanced or compliance-heavy systems. These are vendor estimates. Maintenance is commonly quoted at 15 to 25% of the build cost a year.

Should I build a voice agent or buy an AI receptionist?

Buy if your calls are standard (bookings, FAQs, messages) and your software is on the product's integration list. Build when the agent has to follow your own rules, write into systems an off-the-shelf product does not support, or handle enough volume that per-minute savings pay back the build.
